Jan Smuts Drive streetlights repaired – report vandalism to the City

The City of Cape Town’s Energy Directorate completed all repairs to the severely vandalised streetlights along Jan Smuts Drive. Jan Smuts Drive and the surrounding areas have experienced an increase in streetlight vandalism incidents over recent months with more than 20 streetlights repaired in March 2023. 

The City is monitoring this area, and all hotspot regions, and we appeal to residents to report streetlight vandalism to the City and the South African Police Service.

'Streetlight infrastructure in parts of Jan Smuts Drive have been targeted by criminals and our teams often need to repair the same damaged streetlight infrastructure. This month, City teams repaired and replaced 20 streetlights along this stretch. 

'Our teams are on the ground and we are looking into ways to further protect our infrastructure, however, we are pleading with the community to take ownership of the infrastructure by reporting any form of theft or vandalism to the necessary authorities. We need the support of community members to put an end to this scourge,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen.

Residents may report suspicious activities near electricity infrastructure to both the South African Police Service and the City.
